20 Boobs and Butts Censored for Your Sanity

Boobs. They're everywhere. But not just boobs. Butts, too. Legs as well. Today we're going to take a look at some sexy cover art to various games where there is a bit of a discrepancy between the Japanese art and the American art. Whether it's the last minute touching up some stray underboob or completely redesigning a racy cover, rest assured that the images on the following page are sure to be suitable for American audiences.

To begin, this is certainly not meant to be a compendium of every single instance of this phenomenon. I'm sure there are many, many more cases where the Japanese cover art to a game was "too racy" for American audiences and it was altered when it was brought out over here. Additionally, all the research I put into this was comparing various covers of games I own to what their Japanese counterpart looks like. Digging deeper would surely yield more results! There are no doubt more examples of this sort of censorship, but this is what I came up with in an evening.

With that out of the way, let's begin! Be sure to click on the images to see bigger versions. It'll probably be hard to make out what I'm talking about if you don't.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift 2

Pretty significant changes between the covers, but note that the girl with the barely covered boobs in the top left of the Japanese art is pretty much completely obscured in the American art.

Conception 2: Children of the Seven Stars

In the American art, the girl on the far right next to the Nintendo 3DS bar has had her underboob colored in. Better censor that provocative underboob on that mature rated game!

Dead or Alive Dimensions

In this case, the Japanese art shows a little more of Kasumi's inner thigh. Given Dead or Alive's reputation, it's a very odd thing to censor, but whatever.

One Piece: Unlimited World Red

Since I'm not familiar with One Piece at all, I can't tell you the names of these characters, but in the Japanese art, the girl in the green bikini near the logo is not covered up by the logo like she is in the American one. Additionally, the girl on the far right in blue has been covered up by the hat of that... dog thing.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend

Our good pal BlazBlue shows up again with a little more censoring! In this one, the girl with the red tie in the top right of the American art has had her boobs covered up by a stray piece of blue fabric. The bottom of the art is also altered in the American one, but I can't tell if it's been changed to cover up something or just for cosmetic reasons.

I hesitated to include this one since they're both American covers, but depending on where you bought Catherine, you either got the uncensored version (the left one) or the censored version (the right one). The PlayStation 3 version has a different cover entirely, which we'll get to in a minute. I... guess the uncensored one is moderately risqué.

There was a little too much butt in the Japanese version, so the American art got changed entirely. Neither art looks particularly good. The game wasn't particularly good, either. Just throwing that out there.

Catherine (again)

I have to include this just for completeness' sake. Same story as the Xbox 360 version, though this one is a bit more provocative than the 360 art. Neither, however, are so racy that we needed a censored version.

Hyperdimension Neptunia

The boobs aren't as in your face as they are in the Japanese art. She even has her hand covering up her cleavage in the American art. The Japanese art even has some butt down by the CERO rating!

Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory

Another Hyperdimension game?! This is another case of the Japanese art being a little more overt with its boobs than the American art. The American art even covers up the boobs with the logo. That's pretty crap design, guys.

Mugen Souls

While not the Japanese art, the European art for Mugen Souls has a little underboob that was censored out of the American art. Apparently underboob is too titillating for American audiences, as this is not the only example of this type of alteration.

Shadows of the Damned

Like the Hyperdimension covers, this isn't really a censor, but more of a conservative redesign. The lingerie clad girl is nowhere to be found on the American art, and instead just shows a dude with a gun looking tough. I think the Japanese version is much better, if you want to know the truth.

Tactics Ogre:  Let Us Cling Together

I almost missed this one. The girl at about 11 o'clock on the dial of falling people has bare legs in the Japanese art, but she's wearing brown pantyhose in the American art. I'm actually okay with this alteration because I like that sort of thing.

Deception 4:  Blood Ties

The American art has not only changed her top so she's not showing so much boob, but they've also added some more frills to her skirt so she's not showing so much butt as well!  Scandalous!

From the Abyss

I first noticed this change in the eShop From the Abyss game on 3DS. Looking at the back of the box on the Japanese version of From the Abyss confirms that the American art was censored so she wasn't showing her boobs off so much! The placement of the logo is a little suspect, too. In any case, the art is super crap and looks like it was a first effort drawing by someone who just bought a How to Draw Anime Women book.

Luminous Arc 2

The witch girl on the top left is super busty in the Japanese art, but she has been completely covered up by some cat thing in the American art. Thanks, Atlus!

Steal Princess

This one is a little odd. The girl in purple near the top of the Japanese art and just below and to the left of the logo in the American art has been altered so it looks like she's wearing shorts under her skirt. This is another one I almost missed because the alteration was so tiny.

Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier

The art is shifted dramatically in the American art so the super busty girl is not the focal point of the art. Atlus even went so far as to put their logo directly over her enormous boobs and add some kind of weird red lightning effect around it to obscure them even more. They really didn't want you looking at this girl's boobs, it would seem. The American art just looks weird. You can't get a good look at any of the characters.

Samurai Warriors 3

It looks like her boobs are getting ready to drop out of her top in the Japanese art, but "thankfully" the American art is here to alter it so there's not so much cleavage showing. We might be able to attribute this to the fact that Nintendo published it in America and they didn't want so much boob on their squeaky clean Wii machine.

And finally, the first case of censored art I recall ever seeing...

Double Dragon 2:  The Revenge

While not for the same version of the game, it is the same art, and it has been censored. I remember seeing the art on the left in magazines as a kid, wondering if there was a version of the NES game art where Marian's butt was hanging out like it was in the other art. Unfortunately, no. All NES art is the one on the right with a little more fabric added in to her tattered skirt.

If you know of any more instances of censored boobs and butts in video game box art, post them in the comments! I'm sure I missed a lot, and I'd definitely like to see more. Maybe with your help there are enough I could do a whole other feature!
